About Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits

Who doesn’t love whimsical stories about human heroines making their way in the spirit world. Especially when an ogre king wants her for a bride? If you like josei, slice-of-life, or whimsical creatures and heart-warming stories, then you’ll love Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits.

Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits is a slice-of-life anime, manga, and light novel series (with a dash of romance). It’s about a young woman named Aoi Tsubaki, raised by her grandfather after she’s abandoned by her mother. Her grandfather, Shirō, always taught her how to cook for spirits, but little did she know his reason for it. Aoi is approached by a spirit and told she is to be married in the spirit realm. To her dismay, she finds out that she must either pay off her grandfather’s debt or marry the ogre king.

Marrying the king is out of the question for Aoi, so she works as an owner of her own inn. The only thing she has to offer the spirit realm is her delicious food, so that’s what she does. Through her cooking, perseverance, and kindness, Aoi creates a good life in this strange, new world. She starts making friends with those around her. Even with the handsome ogre king, who may not be as bad as she thought.

Where you can find the series

Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits is written by Midori Yūma. The last volume of the light novel and manga came out in August 2019. Unfortunately the light novel series hasn’t been translated into English, but the manga has. The series also got an anime adaptation in 2017 that was 26 episodes long. It was dubbed in English through Viz Media and is currently available to watch on both Funimation and Crunchyroll.

We hope there will be a second season of this beautifully whimsical anime. For now, we’re just happy for the story to keep going. Check out this lovely series and ready yourself for more slice-of-life sweetness.
