Blade of the Immortal anime licensed by Sentai Filmworks

On October 15th, Sentai Filmworks acquired the distribution rights to the 2019 anime adaption of Blade of the Immortal for international release.

Sentai will release the anime on home video in the winter of next year and will stream the series on select platforms at a later unannounced date. Regions include the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and the Nordic countries.

The adaptation of Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal manga made its debut as an Amazon Prime video exclusive in October of 2019 worldwide.

The series was directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki (Steins;Gate, Orange). Makoto Fukami (Berserk, Psycho-Pass) handled the series scripts. Shingo Ogiso (The Heroic Legend of Arslan) was the lead character designer. And singer-songwriter Eiko Ishibashi composed the music.

Blade of the Immortal synopsis

A synopsis of the plot for Blade of the Immortal is as follows:

Manji is a rogue swordsman, cursed with eternal life. He has grown tired of living with all the death he has created. He has no skills other than those of killing, thus he forms a plan to regain his mortality: he shall kill one hundred evil men for each good one he has killed. The old witch who afflicted Manji with immortality agrees to Manji’s proposition and Manji is set on his path to kill one hundred evil men.

The original Blade of the Immortal manga debuted in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine from December 1993 until 2012. It sold over 30 volumes selling over 5 million copies around the world in 22 countries. The manga also received the Japan Media Arts Excellence prize in 1997 and the Eisner Award for best foreign material in 2000. Dark Horse Comics is publishing omnibus and deluxe editions of the manga.

Blade of the Immortal had its first adaptation in 2008 with Media Blasters releasing the anime in English. Further adaptations include a live-action film directed by Takashi Miike which premiered in Japan in April 2017. The film premiered in the US North at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas in September 2017. The film then went on for a wider theatrical release the month after.
