Netflix Confirms New Castlevania Series Spin-off

Castlevania

An announcement has come from executive producer Kevin Kolde of Netflix’s Castlevania series. Kevin Kolde, along with Castlevania director Sam Deats and assistant director Adam Deats, revealed that a new Castlevania spin-off series is in the works. The announcement came from Netflix’s Geeked Week livestream performance on Friday. Further details about the new spin-off were revealed, including that the new series will star Richter Belmont of the vampire hunting family, alongside Maria Renard. The series will be set in France in the run up to (and after) the French Revolution in the First French Republic in 1792.

Richter and Maria are protagonists in the Castlevania: Rondo of Blood game. They also appear in other games in the series as well, including Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Entertainment news website Deadline reported in April that Netflix was eyeing a new series set in the same universe with a new cast of characters.

The first season premiered worldwide on Netflix back in July 2017. With a short and punchy 4-episode run, the series was an instant success and was followed up with a second season, released by Netflix in October 2018. This second series kept audiences excited with an 8-episode run to boot. Viz Media has released the entire series so far on home video.

Netflix describes the series as follows:

“A vampire hunter fights to save a besieged city from an army of otherworldly beasts controlled by Dracula himself. Inspired by the classic video games.

Sam Deats is directing the series, Warren Ellis is the writer and executive producer, and other executive producers include Shankar, Fred Seibert, and Kevin Kolde.”

The series first came around when Adi Shankar, known for his work on Dredd (2012) and The Grey (2011), announced in 2015 that he was working with Fred Seibert and Kevin Kolde of Frederator Studios, who were known for their work on Adventure Time and Bee and Puppy Cat. The story of the Castlevania series is loosely based on the 1989 NES game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
