An announcement came from the third and fourth combined 2021 issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine for Kaiu Shirai and Posuke Demizu’s hit series The Promised Neverland. The announcement stated that the manga series will get a brand new one-shot story in the next issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, which will ship out on January 4th. The one-shot story is called We Were Born and will have 32 pages of story and one colored page. In the story, the main focus will be that of “another The Promised Neverland.” The chapter kicks off the start of the second season of the anime.
The Promised Neverland one-shot coming
This is not the first one-shot for The Promised Neverland, with Shueisha publishing two one-shot chapters about both Sister Krone and Isabelle that shipped in the 2021 first and second issues of Shonen Jump on December 7th and December 14th respectively.
The Promised Neverland was released in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump back in August 2016 by Shirai and Demizu. The manga series recently ended on June 15th of this year. In North America, Viz Media publishes the manga in digital and physical print. MANGA Plus publishes the manga digitally in English-speaking territories.
The Promised Neverland recently released a bonus chapter called “Special Side Story: The First Shot,” which was released on October 5th in the 44th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. Viz Media and MANGA Plus also published the chapter’s translation in English. Another new one-shot chapter of the manga is set to debut at an exhibition in Tokyo this month.
The anime series adaptation of The Promised Neverland premiered in January 2019 to fan and critic’s praise. Aniplex of America licensed the series to stream on sites such as Crunchyroll, Hulu, Funimation, HIDIVE, and notably, Netflix. The show even had a run on Toonami beginning in April 2019. The second season of the anime is set to premiere on January 7, 2021. The January premiere date is a setback from its original release date, October 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, the series was successful enough to warrant a live-action film adaptation, which just premiered on December 18th. Box office information of the film is as yet unknown. Amazon is also developing a separate live-action adaptation of the series with an all-English cast for Amazon Prime.
