Mamoru Hosoda Reveals His Next Film

Variety magazine reported yesterday that Mamoru Hosoda’s next film is titled Mirai (working title). The movie is “expected to be completed” in May of 2018. Variety describes the upcoming film:

“Mirai follows a 4-year old boy who is struggling to cope with the arrival of a little sister in the family, until things turn magical. A mysterious garden in the backyard of the boy’s home becomes a gateway allowing the child to travel back in time and encounter his mother as a little girl and his great-grandfather as a young man. These fantasy-filled adventures allow the child to change his perspective and help him become the big brother he was meant to be.”

Mamoru Hosoda will again be working with Studio Chizu for his next film. The film will be represented at the Cannes Film Festival by Charades. Hosoda says that there are common themes in his previous films such as youth, family, and parenthood. His upcoming movie will explore the relationship between brothers and sisters.

Hosoda is often called a successor to animation giant Hayao Miyazaki. Last years Tokyo International Film Festival dedicated a special screening section to his work.
