Megalobox

On Thursday, January 28th, animation studio TMS Entertainment unveiled the newest trailer for the sequel series to the hit boxing anime Megalobox. The trailer reveals the title to be Megalobox 2: Nomad, and further reveals the anime’s team, where many of the cast and staff members are set to return. The premiere for the new series was also revealed to be in April 2021 and is set to debut on Tokyo MX and BS11.

TMS Entertainment describes the new anime as follows:

In the end, “Gearless” Joe was the one that reigned as the champion of Megalonia, a first ever Megalobox tournament. Fans everywhere were mesmerized by the meteoric rise of Joe who sprung out from the deepest underground ring to the top in mere three months and without the use of gear. Seven years later, “Gearless” Joe was once again fighting in underground matches. Adorned with scars and once again donning his gear, but now known only as Nomad…

The returning cast members to the series include the following:

  • Yoshimasa Hosoya as Joe a.k.a Nomad
  • Shiro Saito as Gansaku Nanbu
  • Hiroki Yasumoto as Yuri
  • Michiyo Murase as Sachio

The returning staff members include director You Moriyama, head writers Katsuhiko Manabe and Kensaku Kojima, and composer mabanua. New additions to the series include Ayumi Kurashima and Naomi Kaneda. Kurashima, best known for her work on DEVILMAN crybaby, will be replacing Hiroshi Shimizu as the lead character designer for the series, and Kaneda, best known for being a guest on the production of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, will assist Kurashima with character designs.

The first installment of Megalobox had a 13-episode run, premiering on the Japanese TBS channel in April 2018 with a simulcast streaming on Crunchyroll as the series aired. The series gained popularity from its English dub, which premiered in December 2018 on Adult Swim’s Toonami anime block. The series also had a home video release from Viz in June 2019.

The anime coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ikki Kajiwara and Tetsuya Chiba’s Ashita no Joe manga, of which Megaloblox is loosely based. In Ashita no Joe, a man called JD (Junk Dog) participates in fixed boxing matches in an underground ring in order to live.
