Girl From the Other Side Kickstarter Launched and Met Goal on Same Day

WIT Studio launched the Kickstarter campaign for Nagabe’s The Girl From the Other Side on March 11, 2021. The Kickstarter campaign is for an original anime DVD of a “one-hour animation.”

Previously, WIT Studio had created a short anime adaptation for The Girl From the Other Side in 2019. The short anime premiered in 2019 and was incited to nine international festivals.

In an update shared to the Kickstarter site on launch day, WIT Studio shared that the project goal had been reached in just four hours. As of press time, the Kickstarter has raised $86,224. The initial goal was set at $27,481 and the campaign will run until May 9th.

WIT Studio shared this message to backers on their Kickstarter page:

“Thank you all for your great support! It is incredible that we have reached our project goal (JPY3,000,000) in only 4 hours from its launch! We greatly appreciate your support and give you our sincerest thanks for being a part of the project.”

The Kickstarter project will see directors Yutaro Kubo and Satomi Maiya at the helm. They will write, direct, and design characters for The Girl From the Other Side. They both previously worked on the short 2019 adaptation.

Why a Kickstarter for The Girl from the Other Side?

WIT Studio fans might be wondering why they decided to go the crowdfunding route for The Girl From the Other Side. Via Kickstarter, WIT Studio shared that thanks to the support of fans, they were able to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the studio this year.

With the positive reviews that the initial short anime adaptation for Nagabe’s The Girl from the Other Side received, WIT decided to move forward with the crowdfunding campaign. Via Kickstarter, they said the following:

“This crowdfunded project is an attempt to improve the quality of this movie and to let more people know about it. We would like this attempt to be an opportunity for animation production studios and anime fans all around the world to connect with each other, however little.”

Synopsis

The longer adaptation is based off of Nagabe’s manga series. Started in 2015, the series is described by English publisher Seven Seas Entertainment as follows:

In a world split between the Inside and the Outside, those living in both realms are told never to cross over to the other side, lest they be cursed. A young girl named Shiva lives on the other side, in a vacant village with a demonic guardian known only as “Teacher.” Although the two are forbidden to touch, they seem to share a bond that transcends their disparate appearances. But when Shiva leaves Teacher’s care to seek out her grandmother, the secret behind her mysterious living arrangement comes to light.
