Violet Evergarden: The Movie Coming to North America

Violet Evergarden: The Movie

Big news has arrived for many Violet Evergarden fans! Violet Evergarden: The Movie has been out for half a year now, but not in all territories. The film was initially released in Japan and then slowly made its way to other theaters. Now, the wait is over for North Americans who are dying to see the new film.

Violet Evergarden: The Movie will release in select theaters across the U.S. and Canada starting March 30th. When Funimation announced the special premiere, only March 30th was mentioned. However, some theaters are showing that the film will be premiering on April 2nd, so it’s best to check with your local theater to confirm which date will coincide with your location. The film will be in Japanese with English subtitles. You can check out your local theaters’ showtimes and figure out where and when you can view the film during its limited run.

The film was originally intended for a fall 2019 release and then a spring 2020 release, but it was delayed due to the arson attack on the film’s studio, Kyoto Animation, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. It was officially released in September 2020.

For those who are unfamiliar with Violet Evergarden, the series follows the life of a young woman who was trained to be a military weapon. Once leaving the war scene, she must figure out the most challenging task she’s ever faced: becoming human. She yearns to know what it means to love, so she begins working as an “auto memory doll”. For this job, she must write heartfelt letters for clients who don’t know how to express what they want to say to their loved ones. Slowly, she starts to become human, all while remembering the Major–the first person to ever really love her.

The film continues Violet’s story and answers the question of whether or not the Major survived the war and will find his wish for Violet has been fulfilled. He just wanted her to be happy, to love, and to live a normal life. If he is alive (which, viewing from the trailers and promo posters, is pretty much guaranteed), what will he think of Violet’s growth? We are excited to see what happens and look forward to viewing the film on the big screen.
