Backflip!! Anime About Rhythmic Gymnastics Receives New Film

On June 24, 2021, the official website for the Backflip!! (or Bakuten!!) anime series shared that the sports anime would be receiving an all new film. Along with the announcement came an announcement trailer and a link to the Backflip!! movie’s official website.

The anime series has been generally well received, with an average of 7.6/10 on MyAnimeList.net as of publication.

Backflip!! Anime Synopsis and Background

Backflip!! was originally announced as an anime series that would be part of the “Zutto Ōen Project 2011 + 10…” by Fuji TV in November 2020. The project is in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The other two anime projects that will be included in the Zutto Ōen Project are Misaki no Mayoiga, a film, and Hula Fulla Dance, another anime series.

The Zutto Ōen Project is also aimed at promoting three prefectures within Japan: Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate. Backflip!! takes place in Miyagi prefecture.

Crunchyroll’s synopsis as the series describes Backflip!! as follows:

The final summer of middle school, Shotaro Futaba discovers boys gymnastics and is completely enamored by it. Shotaro ends up going to Soshukan Private High School (aka Ao High) and decides to visit the boys gymnastics club. He’s greeted by very unique senpais and a star gymnast named Misato Ryoya. Dedicating your life to something you love during your fiery days of youth… Of course, there is frustration, and fights, but see how these boys work together as a team towards a similar goal in this drama about sports and youth.
