The latest issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine revealed that the Cells at Work! manga will end in its next published issue. The final issue of the manga will be topical, centering on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on people.
Publisher Kodansha is also listing that the sixth compiled volume of the manga will ship in Japan next year, on February 9th, 2021. It will be the first compiled manga volume for the series.
The creator behind the manga, Akane Shimizu, launched the original Cells at Work! manga in the March 2015 issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Sirius. Fans have had to wait long stretches of time between magazine releases, with Shimizu publishing the first new chapter of the manga in two years on October 26th this year. Kodansha Comics is publishing the manga in English and distributing it to overseas territories. Kodansha had shipped the manga’s fifth and last release in relatively quick succession, with the volume hitting shelves in November 2017.

The original manga has inspired various spin-offs, including Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya’s Cells at Work! Code Black (Hataraku Saibō Black). The spin-off manga was originally launched to readers in Weekly Morning and the D Morning digital manga magazine back in June of 2018. The anime adaptation of the Code Black spin-off will premiere in January 2021.
Cells at Work!! (with two exclamation points) is the previously announced second season of Akane Shimizu’s Cells at Work! (with the sequel having two exclamation marks compared to one). It has inspired a television adaptation set to premiere on January 9, 2021. The anime is being produced alongside Code Black. There will be two different teams working on the two anime series. The first television anime of the original manga premiered in July 2018 and aired for 13 episodes.
