Tsurune anime movie announced from Kyoto Animation

Thursday, the official Twitter for Kyoto Animation’s series Tsurune revealed that the anime is getting a film. A teaser for the movie also dropped on Kyoto Animation‘s YouTube channel.

Tsurune premiered originally to Japanese audience’s back in October of 2018 on NHK General. The series had broad international appeal. It was licensed by Sentai Filmworks for streaming on Crunchyroll and HIDIVE streamed the English dub. Tsurune had a home video release from Sentai Filmworks back in January of the first series and an unreleased OVA.

The show’s story is based on Kokomo Ayano’s novel of the same name. Minato Narumiya starts his freshman year at the Kazemai High School. Heading the archery club is Mr. Tommy, who is keen to recruit him along with his friends from childhood. Attending the club, Minato must struggle to learn rare Japanese archery talent while balancing his serious condition and finds that the club brings him closer with his friends. Fans are speculating whether the movie will be a retelling of the first season or a continuation.

The series was directed by Takayuki Yamamura, whose notable work is with directing episodes of Violet Evergarden and Sound! Euphonium. He made his debut as a full series director with Tsurune. Character designs were originally done by Miku Kadowaki of Beyond the Boundary and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. Michiko Yokote was the head of the series scripts who has worked on Shirobako and Children of the Whales. Additionally, Harumi Fuuki of Miss Hokusai and Piano Forest composed the music for the series. It’s unclear if any of these familiar names will return for the movie but time will tell.
