The latest figures from the Japanese box office have been released following the premiere of the latest Rebuild of Evangelion film to domestic theaters in Japan.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time (Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||), has been reported to have sold a whopping 530,000 tickets for a gross profit of around 800 million yen, the equivalent of roughly $7.30 million USD, upon its premiere.
The film premiered at 466 theaters up and down the country on Monday. It has had impressive growth compared to the previous release in the franchise, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 sold 21.7% more tickets and earned 23.8% more revenue in its opening day compared to the You Can (Not) Redo film.
The state of emergency delaying the opening of the film ended on March 7th in Tokyo and all surrounding prefectures. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 has taken longer than originally anticipated to release. The first delay to the film came after the coronavirus had spread to Japan, making the original June 27, 2020 release date undoable.
The movie was pushed to a release date of January 8th. However, this had to be pushed to January 23rd after a declared state of emergency in four different prefectures in interior Japan (which extended to 11). To make up for the newly moved opening date, theaters started handing out leaflets featuring an exclusive illustration of Asuka by the movie’s chief animation director Atsushi Nishigori.
The first three films in the tetralogy, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance, and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, debuted in 2007, 2009, and 2012 respectively. The three films had new MX4D and 4DX screenings in Japan that opened on December 4th, 11th, and 18th, respectively.
