In an announcement put out on November 11, 2020, Katsucon shared that it would be officially canceling the 2021 event. Shared via their website and Twitter, the announcement comes just a handful of months before one of the most anticipated East Coast conventions would have been held.

Via their announcement, Katsucon stated that they had been working on structural changes to the convention layout and overall operations with the intention of moving forward in the safest way possible for the convention and convention goers. However, they “and the Gaylord National Convention Center have come to the conclusion that we are unable to hold our event up to our standards per current county and state COVID-19 regulations”.

The cancelation comes at the tail end of a host of other in-person convention cancellations this year. Katsucon 2021 would have been the convention’s 28th year.

Katsucon refund information

Along with the announcement, a refund FAQ was also posted. For hotel reservations, the refund will automatically be returned to the card that convention attendees used to reserve the hotel room.

As for pre-registration refunds: “all refunds will be returned in the same fashion that the transaction was initiated at the time of registering.”

There is no word on if Katsucon may be offering virtual events in lieu of the cancelation just yet. Were you looking forward to Katsucon 2021? Share your thoughts with us in the comments or on Twitter!
