TOHO Animation just released the first trailer for the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime film. Early on Thursday, the official Twitter for the anime slowly revealed a mysterious countdown. When the timer was fully shown, fans of the series were surprised with a link to a YouTube premiere of the trailer. This first trailer gives us a first glance at the upcoming story and its theme song, “Itto” by King Gnu.
The movie is a prequel to the popular Jujutsu Kaisen shonen series, which won “Anime of the Year” at last year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 comes to Japanese theaters December 24, 2021.
Viz Media describes the plot of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as follows:
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the curse that haunts him?
Jujutsu Kaisen aired in October 2020 and streamed on Crunchyroll. The anime was directed by Sunghoo Park, who also directed the Crunchyroll Original webtoon anime The God of High School. He will also direct Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
The manga is written and illustrated by Gege Akutami and began serialization in 2018 as a part of Weekly Shonen Jump. As of June 2021, over 50 million volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen have been printed and sold.
Also, an upcoming RPG mobile game entitled Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade is in the works. It is being developed by Sumzap and will be available on iOS and Android devices. No release date has been announced for the mobile game as of yet.
